The 2014 FIFA World Cup is only one month away. More and more nations are revealing the final name list of their squad. Yesterday England coach Ray Hodgson announced the 23 players selected for the tournament in Brazil.
Among candidates picked earlier, three have been left out. They are Michael Carrick, Andy Carroll and Kyle Walker. Carrick missed the chance because he performed poorly in Manchester United in this season. He once rejected the standby list for UEFA EURO 2012 however he accepted to be in standby list for this World Cup this time. Carroll, as a striker in Ham United, suffered from injury the whole season and can only be put in standby list. His position is filled by Rickie Lambert whose 14 goals in the season certainly impressed Hodgson. Similarly the Tottenham Hotspur defender Walker didn’t make it because of his pelvic injury.
Young talented left-back Luke Shaw earned the opportunity as the media predicted. On the contrary, Luke’s competitor veteran Ashley Cole, shortly after he learned about the news, announced his retirement from international football last Sunday. Toronto FC striker Jemain Defoe though played very hard, only gets a position in the standby list. Similar case is Tom Cleverley who played nine games in row under Hodgson’s command for 2012-13 season but only finds himself in the standby list.
Only four strikers are chosen for England Squad for Brazil World Cup. They are leading striker Wayne Rooney and supportive striker Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck and Lambert
The midfield of England is quite young this time, with 20 year-old Ross Barkley and teenager Raheem Sterling from Liverpool. The exception is 35-year-old experienced midfielder Frank Lampard. Despite being injured in recent games, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere from Arsenal all make the cut. James Milner is favored by Hodgson over Adam Johnson and Ashley Young while Adam Lallana also makes his cut by an outstanding performance in Soutchampton.
